Castell de Vilafamés stands at the highest point of the town, in the comarca of La Plana Alta. Of Arab origin (Beni-Hamez), it was conquered by Jaime I in 1233 and built between the 12th and 14th centuries, being remodelled in the 19th century. The complex is declared a Cultural Heritage Site.

Among the most notable architectural elements is a central tower with a circular floor plan built during the Carlist Wars, testament to the successive interventions that have transformed the fortress over the centuries.

In a small rock concavity at the summit of the castle — known as l'Abric del Castell — there are rock paintings in schematic style that constitute one of the most important groups of this type in the Valencian Community. Since 1998, they have been part of the Rock Art ensemble of the Mediterranean Arc of the Iberian Peninsula, declared World Heritage by UNESCO.

From the stronghold there are panoramic views of the town and the surrounding mountains. Much of the perimeter of walls that defended the complex remains standing, which still allows one to perceive the original scale of the fortification.
