Castell de Xivert stands at 431 metres above sea level on the southwestern foothills of Serra d'Irta, in the municipality of Alcalà de Xivert (Baix Maestrat, Castellón). Of Islamic origin, its construction dates back to the 10th-11th centuries, when Muslims built an alcázar that visually dominated a wide stretch of the northern Castellón Mediterranean coast.

Following the Christian Reconquest, the castle was taken by the Order of the Temple during the 13th century and underwent significant structural transformations that gave it its current medieval fortress configuration. The Templars reinforced and expanded the original defences, adapting them to the military techniques of the period. After the dissolution of the Order of the Temple in the 14th century, the castle passed to the Order of Montesa.

The monumental complex is considered one of the best preserved and restored in the Valencian Community. It includes towers, curtain walls, cisterns and interior quarters that allow for a reconstruction of the defensive and daily life of the garrison. Rescue archaeological excavations carried out in 1998 provided new information about its constructive evolution.

Access is from the urban nucleus of Alcalà de Xivert via a path that crosses the Mediterranean mountain landscape of Serra d'Irta. The natural surroundings form part of the protected coastal area of Parc Natural de la Serra d'Irta, which adds scenic value to the visit.

In the municipality of Alcalà de Xivert there is a local museum displaying pieces and materials related to the castle's history, complementing the visit to the site with systematic archaeological and historical information.
