Medieval Castle
Fortaleza montano de planta irregular en la Sierra de Espadán
Almonecir Castle stands on a promontory in the municipal area of Vall de Almonacid, in the province of Castellón, very close to the settlement of Algimia de Almonacid. Its strategic position in the centre of the valley made it one of the most important defensive strongholds of the Sierra de Espadán during the Middle Ages.
It is a mountain-type castle, with an irregular plan adapted to the topography of the terrain. It has an internal rectangular enclosure that forms the original core of the construction, to which perimeter defensive elements were added throughout its history.
It is listed as one of the most important castles of the Sierra de Espadán. The Asociación Cultural Almonecir is dedicated to its study, promotion and preservation.
It is usually reached from Vall de Almonacid by a circular walking route of approximately 5.87 km, considered suitable for all audiences and recommended for families with children. The starting point is in the town itself, at about 441 metres above sea level.
The castle is located in the heart of the Sierra de Espadán, a natural area of landscape and ecological value in the interior of Castellón, within the comarca of Alto Palancia.
