Impressive medieval castle on the Rock of Peñíscola, former residence of Pope Luna (Benedict XIII). The Templars constructed it between 1294 and 1307 on the remains of a pre-existing Arab fortress, building a Romanesque style structure that rises 64 metres above sea level. Its perimeter is approximately 230 metres and its average height is 20 metres.

In 1411 the Order of Montesa ceded the fortress to Benedict XIII, Pope Luna, who inhabited it from 1415 until his death in 1423. During this period Peñíscola functioned as a pontifical seat and the castle was adapted to serve this function, constituting one of the most unique episodes in its history. Following the pontiff's death, the fortress returned to the hands of the Order of Montesa in 1441 and subsequently to the crown.

Currently the building is owned by the Provincial Council of Castellón. It was declared a Cultural Heritage Asset with the status of Monument on 3 June 1931, with registration code RI-51-0000510.
