Ermita
Built in the seventeenth century on a hill that dominates l'Alcora
The Hermitage of San Cristóbal stands on the summit of a hill within the municipal area of l'Alcora, from where it overlooks the town as a whole and its surroundings. Its elevated location follows the Mediterranean tradition of placing places of worship dedicated to patron saints on high points in the landscape, which enhances both their visibility and the symbolic character of the dedication.
The building was erected in the 17th century, during a period of intense religious building activity in the comarcas of Castellón. The dedication to San Cristóbal, patron saint of travellers and drivers, has sustained an associated popular celebration that includes Mass, a procession and the blessing of vehicles, and which continues to be held today.
The hermitage appears on the local street map in the area of Carrer la Bassa, although the main access is made by climbing the hill that crowns it. It forms part of a customary pedestrian route from the urban centre of l'Alcora that also includes the Ermita del Calvario.
Its current condition allows liturgical acts to be celebrated, as attested by the annual feast of San Cristóbal, which remains vibrant in the municipality.
L'Alcora belongs to the comarca of l'Alcalatén, in the province of Castellón, and is also known for its ceramic tradition. The hermitage, together with other elements of the local religious heritage, contributes to the cultural identity of the municipality.
