Capilla cofrade
Headquarters of a confraternity founded in 1548 in Castellón
The church of the Purísima Sangre is the seat of the Molt Il·lustre Confraria de la Puríssima Sang de Jesús, one of the oldest brotherhoods in the province of Castellón. The brotherhood was founded in 1548 and was then based in the Convent of Sant Agustí in Castellón de la Plana.
The church is located in the heart of the historic centre of Castellón de la Plana, in the comarca of La Plana Alta, on calle Mayor, also known as plaza María Agustina. It is accessed from the street through a separate door from that of the school with which it shares its built surroundings.
The building functions as a chapel and an active place of worship. Mass is celebrated on Saturdays and on the eves of public holidays at 7 pm, and on Sundays and public holidays at 10 am.
The brotherhood, with more than 475 years of history and documented devotion, organises religious and processional events linked to the liturgical calendar, especially during Holy Week.
The church, which is modest in size, is a landmark of popular religiosity in Castellón and of the intangible heritage associated with the penitential brotherhoods of the Valencian Community.
