Municipal market
Opened on 21 December 1949 in Plaza Mayor
The Mercado Central de Castellón is a public building inaugurated on 21 December 1949 that occupies a prime location in the Plaza Mayor of the city, next to the Town Hall, integrating into the historic centre's urban ensemble. Its location makes it a reference hub for both local commerce and the city's social life.
The original building stands out for its wrought iron construction elements: the metal framework and forged pillars constitute the most distinctive architectural features of its interior, typical of market typology from mid-twentieth century Spain. It houses over 60 food stalls, including vegetable, meat, fish and other fresh produce vendors.
In recent years the market has undergone a process of reform and modernisation. The works have sought to preserve the historic iron elements whilst incorporating improvements such as greater natural light entry, new catering services (bars) and the creation of an upper terrace, thus expanding its function beyond traditional food sales.
The market is open Monday to Saturday from 7:00 to 15:00, following the usual hours of Valencian food markets. Its location in Plaza Mayor, adjacent to the cathedral and Town Hall, makes it an unavoidable stopping point for those exploring the historic centre of Castellón de la Plana.
Beyond its commercial function, the Mercado Central acts as a space for cultural and gastronomic exchange, being one of the places where the supply of local fresh produce and the city's daily dynamics can best be observed.
